In 2013 Federico Martini was promoted to be Director of Product Development and Strategy for Piaggio, but less than a year later, in March this year he was sadly forced to retire from work, as his illness took a decisive turn for the worse. He passed away on November 6.
2005 Federico had returned to the Piaggio Group for a second stint as Head of Powertrain Engineering, which since Piaggio had in the meantime acquired Derbi, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia, entailed a considerable responsibility.
It was under his aegis, for example, that the three-time World Superbike championship-winning Aprilia RSV4 engine was developed, as well as the current new-generation 1400cc Moto Guzzi motor.Another Guzzi design of his, this time
a double overhead-cam liquid-cooled motor, has yet to see production."
